How to choose Macrame Cords

How to choose macrame cord in 30 seconds

Three questions. Answer them in order and you'll land on the right roll.

  1. Will it carry weight?Plant hangers, bags, straps: go braided. It won't stretch or fray. Everything else: keep reading.
  2. Do you want fringe?Soft, fluffy ends: single strand. Neat knots you can still fringe a little: 3-ply twisted.
  3. How big is the piece?Jewellery: 1mm. Keychains and small hangers: 2mm to 3mm. Wall hangings: 4mm to 5mm. Statement pieces: 6mm+ rope.

First project? Get 3mm or 4mm 3-ply twisted cord. You'll see every knot clearly, mistakes untie easily, and the ends brush out into fringe.

Macrame cord or macrame thread?

Macrame cord, macrame thread, macrame rope, macrame dhaga. They all mean a cord you tie by hand into knots. Most Indian buyers say “thread”, and pattern books from abroad say “cord”. “Rope” usually means the chunky 6mm-and-up sizes.

The name doesn't change your project. Two things do: how the cord is made, and how thick it is. That's what the next two tables are for.

Macrame cord size guide: which mm should you buy?

The mm number is the thickness, not the length. Length is always listed separately in metres. For most home decor, 3mm or 4mm is the sweet spot.

ThicknessGood forShop it in
1mm to 1.5mmJewellery, micro macrame, gift tagsMicro macrame, wax cord
2mm to 2.5mmKeychains, earrings, small plant hangers3 ply, braided, knitted
3mmSmall wall hangings, coasters, crochet3 ply, single strand, crochet
4mm to 5mmMedium wall hangings, runners, bag straps3 ply, braided, silky
6mm and upStatement wall art, chunky decor, furnitureTwisted ropes, knitted ropes, jute ropes

Thicker isn't always better. 5mm makes bold knots but eats length fast and looks clumsy on small pieces. Compare every size in our 1mm to 8mm thickness guide.

How much macrame thread do you need?

Cut each cord about 4 times the finished length of your piece. Folding cords in half over a dowel? Cut 8 times. Tight, dense knotting and thicker cord need a little more.

The mistake we see every week: someone runs out halfway, reorders, and the new roll is from a different dye batch. Buy one extra roll of the same colour on day one. It's cheaper than redoing a wall hanging.

Macrame cord frequently asked questions

Is macrame cord the same as macrame thread?

Yes. Macrame cord, macrame thread, macrame rope and macrame dhaga all mean a cord you knot by hand. In India most people say thread. Outside India most say cord. Rope usually means 6mm and thicker.

What does 5mm macrame cord mean?

5mm is the thickness, not the length. Length is listed separately in metres, for example 5mm x 100 metres. Thicker cord makes bigger knots and uses length faster.

Which macrame cord is best for beginners?

3mm or 4mm 3-ply twisted cord is the best choice for beginners. You can see every knot, untie mistakes easily and brush the ends into fringe. Leave 1mm and wax cord until you've finished a project or two. Our 13 beginner mistakes guide covers the rest.

How much macrame cord do I need for a project?

Cut each cord about 4 times the finished length, or 8 times if you fold it over a dowel. Buy one roll extra in the same colour so a reorder doesn't mismatch.
