How cord length is calculated

Working length = finished height × knot multiplier + fringe. Folded attachments double the cut. Add a buffer, then multiply by cord count.

  1. 1

    Enter finished size

Height of the finished piece, and width if you want a cord-count suggestion.

  2. 2

    Choose knot density

Open designs use less cord; square knots and wraps use more.

  3. 3

    Set attachment & buffer

Lark’s Head doubles cut length. 10% buffer is a good default.

  4. 4

    Get your cut list

Worked examples

See how inputs become a cut list for three common projects.

Wall hanging

  • Finished height 50 cm
  • Square knot (4×)
  • Fringe 10 cm
  • Lark’s Head
  • 10 cords
  • 10% buffer

(50 × 4) + 10 = 210 cm per strand

210 × 2 = 420 cm cut length (folded)

420 × 10 = 4,200 cm total

4,200 × 1.10 = 4,620 cm with buffer

Cut each cord at 4.2 m. Buy 46.2 m total.

Plant hanger

  • Finished height 80 cm
  • Square knot (4×)
  • Fringe 5 cm
  • Lark’s Head
  • 8 cords
  • 10% buffer

(80 × 4) + 5 = 325 cm per strand

325 × 2 = 650 cm cut length (folded)

650 × 8 = 5,200 cm total

5,200 × 1.10 = 5,720 cm with buffer

Cut each cord at 6.5 m. Buy 57.2 m total.

Bracelet

  • Finished height 16 cm
  • Spiral knot (4×)
  • Single strand
  • 4 cords
  • 10% buffer

(16 × 4) + 0 = 64 cm per strand

64 × 1 = 64 cm cut length (single)

64 × 4 = 256 cm total

256 × 1.10 = 282 cm with buffer

Cut each cord at 64 cm. Buy 282 cm total.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on finished height and knot density. As a guide, cut each working cord about 3 to 8 times the finished length, then double that if cords fold over a mounting bar (Lark’s Head). This calculator applies the multiplier for your knot style and adds fringe and a safety buffer.
Loose designs often use about 4× the finished length; dense, knot-heavy work may need 6× to 8×. Folded attachments need that amount doubled again. The calculator refines the average using your knot type, fringe, and buffer.
Yes. Thicker cord fills width faster, so you usually need fewer cords for the same finished width. Thinner cord needs more strands. Use finished width and thickness to auto-suggest a cord count, then adjust for your pattern.
Yes. Switch to the Sewing / embroidery tab for garment or custom stitch estimates, then use Spool & cost to turn meters into spool counts (and optional cost). Shop matching cords and threads on Macrame.co.in when you are ready.
It uses common craft multipliers. Final use varies with tension, material, and pattern density. For large or expensive projects, knot a small sample, measure cord used, and adjust the multiplier before cutting every strand.

Method & limitations

This calculator uses common macrame multipliers: looser projects use less cord, dense knot-heavy projects use more, and folded attachments need double the working length. Width and thickness only drive the optional cord-count suggestion. Final use varies with knot tension, rope material, pattern density, and how much fringe you trim. For expensive cord or unfamiliar knots, make a short sample and adjust the multiplier before cutting every strand.
