Running out of cord two knots from the end has no good fix. A join always shows. This guide gives you one formula to work out exactly how many meters to buy, whatever the thickness or pattern.
What is the basic rule for macrame cord length?
Each cord needs about four times the finished length of your project. Most cords fold in half over a dowel with a lark's head knot, so you double that before cutting.
That's a 30-inch wall hanging needing 240 inches per cord. Multiply by the number of cords for your total.
Most common mistake
Forgetting to double for the fold. Every cord ends up hanging at half the length you planned.
How does cord thickness change the amount you need?
Thicker cord uses more length inside every knot, so the multiplier goes up. The last column shows what to cut per folded cord for a 50cm finished piece.
| Thickness | Multiplier | Cut per cord, 50cm piece | Shop |
| 1 to 2mm | 3 to 4× | 300 to 400cm | Micro macrame cords |
| 3mm | 4× | 400cm | 3-ply twisted cords |
| 4mm | 4× (baseline) | 400cm | 3-ply twisted cords |
| 5mm | 4.5 to 5× | 450 to 500cm | Single strand cords |
| 6mm | 5× | 500cm | All macrame cords |
| 7 to 8mm | 5.5 to 6.5× | 550 to 650cm | Twisted ropes |
How does pattern density change the amount?
The table above is for open patterns. The more knots you pack in, the more cord each knot eats.
Open pattern
Use the tableLots of space, long unknotted runs, mostly half hitches. Plant hangers usually sit here.
Standard pattern
Add 25%Mixed knots with moderate spacing. Most wall hangings.
Dense pattern
Add 50%Stacked or alternating square knots, tight grids, solid panels.
Three small extras
Add your fringe length before doubling. Add 15% if you tie loose. Add 30cm to any cord that becomes a gathering knot.
Worked example: how much to buy for a wall hanging
You're making a wall hanging that will be 75cm long, using 12 cords of 4mm cotton.
Step 1: Length of each cord
Step 2: Total cord for the project
What to buy
One 100m spool. Always round up to the next spool size, never down.
How do you convert a pattern to a different thickness?
Every macrame pattern is written for one cord size. It might say: cut 8 cords, each 4m long, in 4mm cord. If your cord is a different size, the lengths need to change too. Thicker cord uses up more length in every knot, so you cut longer. Thinner cord uses less, so you cut shorter.
How to use the table: find the cord size your pattern asks for, then the cord size you have. The last column shows the new length for a pattern that says 4m.
| Pattern asks for | You have | Change each cord | If the pattern says 4m, cut |
| 4mm | 3mm | No change | 4m |
| 4mm | 5mm | 20% longer | 4.8m |
| 4mm | 6mm | 25% longer | 5m |
| 4mm | 8mm | 50% longer | 6m |
| 5mm | 4mm | 15% shorter | 3.4m |
| 5mm | 8mm | 25% longer | 5m |
| 6mm | 8mm | 20% longer | 4.8m |
Your pattern uses a different length?
Use the same percentage. A pattern that says 3m of 4mm cord needs 20% more in 5mm: 3m + 0.6m = 3.6m.
Before you cut everything
Tie three or four knots in your cord to check the look. Thicker cord also makes the piece wider, so check your dowel is long enough.
How do you avoid running short when buying?
Most shortfalls come from buying decisions, not from the maths.
Do
- Buy the whole project's cord in one order
- Round up to the next spool size
- If a pattern says 25m, buy 30m
- Tie a test knot before cutting
Avoid
- Topping up from a different supplier mid-project
- Buying exactly the calculated amount
- Switching to thinner cord to save money
- Cutting all cords before checking one
Which cord should you buy?
Once you know the meters, the cord type decides how the piece looks. Our macrame cord types guide compares single strand, 3-ply and braided. Our thickness guide matches each size from 1mm to 8mm to projects.

How much macrame cord do I need for a wall hanging?
Cut each cord at 4× the finished length, double it if the cords fold over the dowel, then multiply by the number of cords. A 75cm hanging with 12 folded cords in 4mm needs about 72m, or 80m with a 10% buffer.
How much cord do I need for a plant hanger?
Usually less than a wall hanging of the same length, because plant hangers have long unknotted sections. Use the open-pattern multiplier and add 30cm for the cord that wraps the gathering knot.
Do I double the length if I fold the cords?
Yes. A lark's head knot folds each cord in half, so cut twice the working length you need.
How much extra cord do I need when going up in thickness?
About 20% more going from 4mm to 5mm, 25% more for 6mm, and 50% more for 8mm. Add a 10% buffer on top of any conversion.
What if I run out of cord mid-project?
A join always shows, so it's far better to cut long from the start. If you must add cord, buy the same cord from the same supplier and place it where it won't sit next to the original.
